Lewisham Council consults on future of Beckenham Place Park

The stage one bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund contained a draft masterplan showing some of  Lewisham Council’s development ideas for Beckenham Place Park. You can view the plan here

Tell the Council your views by emailing bpp@lewisham.gov.uk

This mansion was built about 1773 for John Cator (1728-1806). You can read more in the listing description here.

Redevelopment of art deco gem – Tower House, Lewisham

Building Design Magazine has reported that  Barr Gazetas has won consent to convert the 1930s Tower House former department store. The building will receive a two storey roof extension.

You can see Barr Gazetas proposed restoration of the front of the building here.

It is a shame that the opportunity has not been taken to reinstall the stunning neon decoration which once covered the front as seen in this 1933 video of the opening ceremony. This would create a real architectural landmark for Lewisham.tower_house

Formal expressions of interest in Ladywell baths expected soon

We understand that Lewisham Council  will be asking for formal expressions of interest from those interested in Ladywell Baths /Playtower in a matter of weeks. The Council is expected to give guidelines of what it will expect from a bid.

Historic England and The Heritage Lottery Fund recently visited the building in what is hopefully a positive sign.

We will share more when we have it!

What’s planned for Ladywell Old Baths/Play Tower?

Many organisations have expressed interest in the Ladywell Old Baths/Play Tower since it was named as one of the Victorian Society’s 2015 Top Ten Endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales.

Having lain empty for over 10 years significant investment will be needed to bring the building back into use.

The Trust is aware of a number of proposals for reusing the building. These include a swimming pool/gym, climbing centre, research centre, incubator business space, cafe, restaurant, dance rehearsal space, and a cinema.

At the Ladywell Assembly on 27th January the Council indicated it would, within six weeks,  begin a procurement process to decide which of the organisations proposing to refurbish and reuse the building it wishes to partner with.

Nice to have met you…

Our stand at the Ladywell Christmas Market was the perfect place to launch the rejuvenated Lewisham Building Preservation Trust. With a focus on finding a new, sustainable use for the Ladywell Playtower, it gave us the opportunity to talk to local people for their views on what the future might hold for this at-risk, listed building. Thanks to those of you who stopped to chat. We’ve collated all the comments and will be feeding those back to the council at the relevant moment.xmas market
